THE HIDDEN MASTER ![]() 1970-1978 he had been chosen by the mysterious man (anonymous) from Solo Royal House to learn and practice the spiritual discipline “Kejawen-Prana Seta & Yoga Jawa”, the secret art of royal Javanese spirituality. Since then, Kanjeng Madi has been the lineage holder of the Guru. Later, this knowledge has been called ‘Daya Putih’ or the sacred or intuition energy. Around 1991, Kanjeng Madi was caught unawares at his house in Ubud, Bali, by a young boy dashing in to escape the wrath of his father. The older man first tried to attack his son with his fists, then swung a hoe at him and as a last resort, attempted to smash his brains with a rock. At the onset of each attack, Madi invoked the force of Daya Putih - The White Power - compelling the father to stop by sheer will power.
“I learned Daya Putih when I was 17,” says Madi who is now 53, ”Until 1991, I pursued other arts - writing, painting and calligraphy - and became a multi talented artist in Ubud. I didn’t want to teach Daya Putih. I hid to myself that I’m the lineage holder of Daya Putih. So it looked as if the spiritual art of Daya Putih was going to die out. Then this incident happened and it was like a sign, a portent, telling me what I should do.” Now, some Indonesian and overseas students a month attend Daya Putih School in Ubud for spiritual and bodily exercise, learning to concentrate their breathing and, for want of a better expression, inner energy and power. Deriving from Indian, Chinese and Javanese techniques which date back 700 years or more (period Majapahit Kingdom), Daya Putih essentially banishes negative forces from the body and, using electromagnetic energy, protects individuals from outside harm. The result is a more harmonious, happy, confident, peaceful and successful individual. Whatever the teaching and its results, there is no doubting the pacifying effect of Ubud and its surroundings, characterized by swathes of emerald-green rice fields and a lifestyle that moves to the gentle rhythms and soft clicks of miniature bamboo windmills. When Walter Spies and others westerners founded an artist’s colony here before the war, they were drawn by the creative temperament inherent in every Balinese, as well as the area’s natural and spiritual beauty, elements which are still manifest today. Yet since the 1930s, it has been a common complaint of returning visitors that Bali is spoiled, not what its used to be. The reverse is true of Prince Kanjeng Madi, who has revitalized an ancient art, teaches not for profit but to educate, continues to paint in a style that approximates to Dali but without the pretension and self-aggrandizement, and has even appeared in a pop video, acting with perfect equanimity alongside DJ Crow of Germany. This is paradise regained. |
